Safety Performance Measures

One of our top priorities is the health and safety of our employees, customers, contractors, communities and the general public.

As part of our focus on strengthening our ESH capabilities and performance, and in an effort to place greater emphasis on the importance of safety in the workplace, we recently added two safety measures to the criteria that will be used to calculate 2009 short-term cash incentive awards for all of our employees.

These two measures include:

Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) – the number of OSHA- (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) recordable injuries and illnesses per 200,000 work hours; and

Vehicle Incident Frequency Rate (VIFR) – vehicle incidents involving a fleet or rental vehicle that result in personal injury or damage to a vehicle or property per 1,000,000 miles driven.

Consistently using metrics such as TRIR and VIFR allows us to measure our progress toward improving our safety record and to compare the company’s business segments’ performance with each other and with industry peers.

ONE Commitment

We will work to improve our safety practices in 2010 by:

  • Implementing behavioral-based employee programs that reinforce the importance of safeguarding employees and others in the workplace.
  • Conducting contractor-safety program reviews and on-site audits.
  • Conducting weekly meetings to review recent incidents and “near misses” in an effort to prevent reoccurrences.
  • Implementing a centralized “event and near miss” reporting system that includes action-item tracking to assist with timely prevention follow up.
